MicrocephalyMicrocephaly is defined as under development of the brain in association with a head circumference that is two standard deviations below the average based on size, family history, ethnicity and age. "Micro" is the latin root word for "small", and "-cephaly" is the latin root word for "Brain". Microcephaly is a rare genetic disorder in which the head and brain does not develop at the same rate as peers of age, gender, or size. (Stevenson, 1997) Microcephaly relates to neurological development delays, and retardation. It is found in 1 to 6200 births. Fifteen percent of those diagnosed function with normal intelligence.
