MacrocephalyMacrocephaly is defined as a head circumference that is two standard deviations greater than the average based on age, size, and family history. Macrocephaly is the most common physical characteristic of children with autism. (Stevenson, 1997) In association with megalencephaly, which is an overgrowth of the brain, those diagnosed are at risk for developmental delays and other mental retardations. (Williams, 2008) Macrocephaly is a common reason for referral to a pediatric neurosurgeon. If a child is measured with a large head circumference there could be hydrocephalus (fluid in the brain )or other problems that may be harmful to the child. (Durham, 2009) In some cases children diagnosed with macrocephaly have no accompanying diseases and live normal functioning lives. (Gabbey, 2014)
